RD: Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Rosaura: I’m an artist from Northern California and I own the business Pigment & Parchment. Primarily I specialize in couture wedding stationery for brides & grooms all around the world. I also have an online shop- but one of my favorite things I do is I teach workshops in modern calligraphy, brush lettering & hand lettering. Knowing I’m sparking creativity in others makes me happier than anything else.

RD: How and when did you first discover Rhodia products?

Rosaura: I first discovered Rhodia products in high school when I was taking a weekend comic book illustration class at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. That was when I first dipped my calligraphy nibs in ink and realized regular sketchbook paper was just not going to cut it. I tried Rhodia pads and it was as smooth as cutting into warm butter.

RD: Which are your favorite Rhodia products?

Rosaura: My favorite Rhodia pad is the 6×8 blank pads. I have a really loose style so though the grids, lines & dots can be handy I don’t need them. It makes editing the scans of my artwork easy & the size is perfect for anytime I’m out & about and don’t have tons of space in my bag!

RD: Do you always use the same product(s) or do you change periodically?

Rosaura: I mix it up and have tried all the paper types & sizes in my workshops. Students LOVE the grid & dots papers. Once I found my favorite though that’s the main one I use for artwork I create.

RD: Do you use them in any way that is specific to your work?

Rosaura: Since I can lay them over and see through them (using a light box) I paint my watercolor illustrations on watercolor paper which is not great for calligraphy nibs at all. I then lay the Rhodia paper over that painting so I can see the exact space I’m lettering in and go to town with my calligraphy nibs lettering away! This makes editing the two together a breeze since they fit together like puzzle pieces.

RD: Does using Rhodia products make your job easier in any way? (Do quality tools make the job easier?)

Rosaura: Quality tools make a world of difference. This took me time to learn how true it was. Using Rhodia paper I don’t waste time with paper that snags on the calligraphy nibs and I don’t have ink splattering everywhere because it is so smooth. It’s the quality of a fine vellum without the price tag. I also love that they tear at the top so easily. I lose less paper area that way and it makes the steps from sketching to scanning quicker & easier for me!

RD: Pencil, pen or other? Favorites?

Rosaura: Calligraphy nibs & brush pens.

RD: Where do you regularly purchase Rhodia products?

Rosaura: I purchase them at paperinkarts.com and in person at my local art stores.

RD: Is there any way we could improve on your favorite product?

Rosaura: The only improvement I’d suggest is either a big rubber band to hold them shut in transport or a snap shut flap on the bottom. On occasion I’ve crumpled up some sheets in transport when they open up in my bag.

Many thanks to Rosaura for being featured in a Rhodia Fan Profile!

  1. For Calligraphy – can you use the Calligraphy nibs on a normal fountain pen? Let’s say a LAMY Safari.
