RD: Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Well my name’s Martyna, I’m a Product Graphics Designer at Whirlpool Corporation doing graphics for KitchenAid and JennAir appliances. I live in St. Joseph Michigan, a tiny beach town an hour and a half from Chicago. I also rent out an art studio in St. Joseph with 2 other girls and I paint and illustrate in my spare time. I also have a pet rabbit named Panda!
RD: How and when did you first discover Rhodia products?
I actually bought my first Rhodia product in Tokyo Japan a few years ago. I bought your orange faux leather bound dot grid sketchbook. It was large, I dont think you make them anymore unfortunately!! I loved it the moment I saw it – the texture of the cover, the color, a the new dotted grid design was all immediately appealing to me!
RD: Does using Rhodia products in any way make your job easier? (Do quality tools make the job easier?)
Yes and yes. As a designer and an artist, your tools are immensely important. They clear the path for allowing you to focus on the idea with out having to spend time fixing, fudging, and prepping. Anything that can make the process easier, less complicated is going to allow you to do more work in the end.
RD: Which are your favorite Rhodia products?
I loooove your Italian leatherette notebooks with dot-grid paper and your orange and black pencils. Everything looks so chic when used together and the paper is so perfect.
RD: Do you use them in any way that is specific to your job?
Well I can do everything in my dot – grid notepads, from taking notes to sketching compositions, typefaces, etc. In my art I often do my actual illustrations in my notebooks and then bring them into Photoshop to color and touch them up. I’m always using at least 3 different notebooks at any given time plus a planner. There’s something very comforting about physical books, pads, and writing and drawing by hand that will never go away even with the amazing things that the digital world can do. I love having best of both of those worlds.
RD: Pencil, pen, or other? Favorites?
PENS. I always need one good pencil but I am obsessed with all different kinds of pens and I love testing out different brands so that I can have a well selected case of perfect pens! This is also why it’s important to have versatile and bleed-less paper. Right now my favorite pen is my Bravo Pilot Ink pen. I also love a good Kuretake brush pen.
RD: Is there any way we could improve on your favorite product?
Bring the large leatherette notebook back! Maybe also making products for portfolio quality work – thicker paper and larger sizes with the leatherette covers. Love love love the leatherette!
