Mandala Doodling on a Rhodia dotPad

Stephanie

These days I work in lots of different kinds of art media but I still consider myself a doodler.

It was about 5 1/2 years ago that I first started doodling mandalas- a circular art form typically represented by concentric circular patterns radiating from the center outward. For the first 4 years I drew them almost constantly in sketchbooks, tablets, notebooks, etc., typically with a fountain pen or marker. Sometimes I’d draw up to ten in a single day just by sitting and doodling one after another… this became my meditation.

Do you doodle? Do you do it just to kill time/keep your hands occupied or do actually you make the time to do it?

  1. I have many notebooks FILLED with mandalas (but mostly square, if you can call a square mandala a mandala…lol) and other geometric designs as well as a 3 drawer file cabinet, one of the wide ones, with 2 drawers FULL of the same type of art work on various substrates with various medias. I “doodle” to live. I make time for it and make art out of it and I also do it during down times to take up time.

  3. I tend to doodle when I’m writing, especially if I get stuck on a thought or image. I doodle in office meetings too and actually got called out in front of my colleagues for it. I told my supervisor that doodling has been proven to help people concentrate but she thought I was being a smart-aleck. I still do it, I just don’t sit up front at meetings anymore;)
