I will admit that I am one of the lucky ones because there is an honest to goodness art supply store (Blick) not to far from my house and I go there all the time. In the past 5 years, I have probably spent more money in that store than in any other. Except food. (I think.) I buy sketchpads, markers, paint, canvases, artist crayons, drawing pens… you name it. I go pretty much every time they send me discount/sale postcards and sometimes even when they don’t. One might think I am an art supply hoarder, but I’m not. (Says me) It pretty much all gets used on a regular basis though having my own art studio now means not having to store my extra canvases in the attic.
There is something about walking into a large space filled with art supplies – all that potential inspiration for creativity, it just boggles my mind. I look at things, pick them up and in some cases smell them – I mean who isn’t moved in some way by the scent of a fresh box of crayons?
I know there are some people that have no access to any kind of local art store and that makes me sad. Having to buy supplies online or from a catalog is tough – so many choices and not being able to see paint colors or paper textures can make things difficult, though not impossible.
I noticed the other day that my Blick is now carrying the Rhodia Mousepads and the new Unlimited pocket journals in addition to some of the standard Bloc Rhodia pads. Nice. Not all of the Blick stores carry Rhodia but it makes me extra happy that mine does.
Do you have access to a local art supply store? A favorite? I want to go to the ones in New York City though I am afraid I’d buy too much and they wouldn’t let me back on the bus….
