Power Outage

It shouldn’t be snowing in October in northeastern Pennsylvania- and certainly not 7-10 inches worth. The leaves hadn’t even finished turning colors and now most of those trees have lost their limbs due to the weight of the snow. Roads in my neighborhood look like a war zone with all the downed branches. My power was out for most of Saturday, came on for about 3 hours late in the evening, then out again and it’s been out ever since.

No electric. No heat, but we do have hot water. Neighbor has a gas stove so I baked up a bag of chicken patties and cooked off 22 eggs- pretty much the only things in my fridge as I luckily didn’t go shopping for the obligatory eggs, bread and milk. (I guess everyone makes French toast in the snow.) I didn’t grab snow goodies because I didn’t know about the storm until midday Friday. In lieu of heading to the store, I cleaned my furnace grates and turned on my furnace for the first time this year. I thought that would be a good idea but since it’s powered by electricity, it is somewhat irrelevant as I type this into my phone while wearing 3 layers of clothes under a blanket and wearing a spelunking headlamp.

I do not live in a rural area and power outages of this length are relatively non-existent but not to worry- I am treating this like an adventure. My only real concern is for my bird- I have a cockatiel named Sunny and I am worried he might freeze his feathers off. His cage is covered with blankets and I ran out to a local drugstore and bought him a hot water bottle which I put at the bottom of his cage. I think he will be okay.

Dinner was Popeye’s chicken and we are listening to football on a portable radio. I read for a while on my Kindle. Been saving my phone battery and only checking the web for brief snips at a time. The electric company website states the power should back on by noon tomorrow (Monday) so hopefully I can get things back to normal. Power goes out, you see how much we take for granted- all of the little conveniences in our lives…

Since I didn’t take any pictures of the storm with this phone, I am instead including an image of a local favorite hot dog shop.

Happy Halloween!

PS This is my first time posting from my phone. If the formatting is all wonky, please forgive me

  1. Hope things have improved for you… We finally got our electricity back. Hope this is not a sign of things to come this winter season. Yikes!

  3. We had no power for 36 hours, so I feel your pain, only to a more limited degree. I got my anniversary gifts Thursday and am beyond thrilled with them. I’m using the pencil and notebook for Nanowrimo. I may be insane to think I can write a novel in a month, but at least I have great supplies for doing so!
