3:00 am Saturday night and I am still awake. Oh sure, I may be a little bit tired, but it’s times like these when the house is ultra quiet and my brain is starting to shut down that I can focus quite clearly on just one thing. And tonight I felt suddenly inspired to write a list of everyone I worked with at the camera shop from the years of 1985-1996. While this might sound odd and trivial, lists such as this make for excellent creative writing prompts. In the half hour or so I spent on the list (about 45 names) I must have easily come up with 100 different memories attached to that job – which I left 15 years ago and would have likely had forgotten if not for this exercise. Hmmm… Perhaps some of them may have been better forgotten but as a writer who loves to write, these prompts not only help when writing memoirs, but can also be useful for future fictional character development.
Maybe you can list out who you used to go to concerts with, or people in your 4H club. I have a list from people I remember from the 1st grade and people who were important to me in 2010.
What will your list be about, and how might you use it?
