The Smell of Books

Karen

When work or life gets too stressful and overwhelming, I pack up and head to a bookstore. Spending some time walking in the aisles, picking up the books, turning the pages, breathing in their scent, calms me down and makes me feel reassured and centered. This is particularly the case with old books–their sturdiness, their age, the heaviness of the pages–has always been a steadying and soothing influence when I am upset or feel disquieted.

Does the smell of old books (or new books) and paper have an effect on you?

PS – One of my favorite places is Strand Bookstore in New York.

  1. Unfortunately, it seems that more and more, “bricks and mortar” stores are going the way of the albatross. Just got news this week that Joseph Beth Booksellers (large indie store with branches in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and a few other choice locations) filed for bankruptcy. Doors will close soon after Christmas.

I also see Borders and Barnes and Noble are shadows of their former selves. Where will we be going for the smell of books 20 years from now?

  3. There’s a mould that grows on old books. It does induce a sense of relaxation and well being – some kind of gas, I think. I can’t remember what it’s called.
New books are like new fabric – they have a scent all their own,
