Placing a “#” before a keyword or phrase on Twitter allows people to track a particular subject, and the combination of the “#” and the keyword when used together is called a hashtag. These hashtags can be searched through most Twitter portal applications, (I use iTweet) and also through Twitter itself. Read an excellent article explaining the in’s & out’s of hashtags on Mashable.
