A grapefruit spoon is not a unitasker.

Stephanie

I am a self professed Food Network junkie. I probably have more food shows TiVo’d than anything else. One show I like to watch is Alton Brown’s “Good Eats.” Where he deconstructs, demystifies, and reinvents different ingredients, recipes and techniques.

One thing that Alton constantly preaches is that there is no room in the kitchen for a unitasker – meaning any kitchen implement must serve more than one purpose to earn it’s place.  As I live in a teeny tiny house, I certainly understand that. Heck, I don’t even own a blender. But he who has on more than one occasion displayed a drawer filled with varying sizes of “dishers” (ice cream scoops) raised my hackles the other day when he called a grapefruit spoon a unitasker.

Years ago, when I actually was eating grapefruit, I decided I wanted a serrated grapefruit spoon to make the job a little easier. So I bought one- yes… a single one, for .25 at a junk shop. I think I’ve owned it for at least 15 years. While it’s rare I use it for grapefruit any more, I have used it to section out avocado, to scrape out the seeds from cantaloupe and halved cucumbers, and most recently, I found that it works beautifully to remove the top of a strawberry.

So there :o)

How do you feel about unitaskers? Are there any you just can’t live without?

  1. Well I found that Alton Brown changes his mind as much as a normal blonde southern person does. I’ve watched him praise gadgets only to condemn them to the fiery pit of uselessness later. He even does it with techniques.

  3. FYI–In the episode about Tomatoes “Tomato Envy” he calls the grapefruit spoon “one of my favorite multi-taskers”.

  5. Stephanie: Wow! That’s a switch. As I said, he’s spoken highly of them for years. I’m curious if he’s going to explain that one.
